What Is GEO? How It Differs From SEO
A practical explanation of GEO, how it differs from SEO, and how to measure both without reducing visibility to one ranking.

SEO helps search engines discover and rank pages. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) helps generative systems discover, explain, and cite reliable information in an answer. They overlap, but they are not the same job.
The difference in one sentence
SEO asks: “Can the right person find and click this page?” GEO asks: “Can an AI system retrieve, understand, and cite this information when answering a relevant question?”
What to measure in GEO
Track brand mention rate, explanation accuracy, citation rate, cited page, and variation by question and engine. Repeat the same question set so a single surprising answer does not become a false trend.
The structure of a useful GEO page
Answer the main question early. Define important terms. Keep one claim and its supporting evidence close together. Use descriptive headings, first-party facts, clear authorship, update dates, and links that help a reader verify the claim.
How to run SEO and GEO together
First make the page crawlable and useful for search. Then map the questions customers ask, test how AI systems answer them, and improve the source pages where the answer is incomplete or inaccurate.
A short checklist
- Does the first paragraph answer the page title?
- Are facts and sources easy to distinguish?
- Can an engine identify the brand, author, and update date?
- Are related questions answered without duplicating another page?
- Are mentions and citations measured repeatedly?
No markup file or single technical trick guarantees an AI citation. Good information architecture and repeated observation are the durable foundation.
