Search Visibility 101
SEO vs GEO: Improve Search Rankings and AI Visibility Together
SEO and GEO solve different visibility problems. This guide shows how to connect rankings, AI answers, content structure, and measurement.

SEO and GEO are often discussed as if one replaces the other. In practice, SEO improves discovery and clicks in search results, while GEO improves the clarity and retrievability of information in generative answers.
The core difference
SEO is usually evaluated through impressions, ranking, clicks, organic visits, and conversions. GEO adds mention rate, answer accuracy, citation rate, and the pages used as sources. These signals should be connected, not collapsed into one score.
Why a high ranking may not become an AI citation
Search ranking does not tell an AI system exactly which sentence answers a question, whether the publisher is trustworthy for that claim, or how a product relates to a category. A page can be discoverable but still be ambiguous, unsupported, stale, or too broad.
A practical execution order
- Fix crawlability, indexing, titles, and page intent.
- Map real customer questions to dedicated source pages.
- Put direct answers and evidence near the top of each page.
- Measure the same questions across engines and dates.
Before publishing
Check that the page has one clear purpose, a direct opening answer, consistent entity facts, descriptive internal links, visible authorship or publisher context, and a meaningful update signal. Then record the baseline before changing it.
The strongest search strategy is not SEO versus GEO. It is a shared information system with separate metrics for each surface.
